Google Ads or Facebook Ads for Dentists?
It is a fair question, but the better one is which platform brings in patients now without draining your budget. Here is how I sequence them.
If you are growing a dental practice with advertising, you have probably asked whether you should run Google Ads or Facebook Ads. It is a fair question, but the better one is which platform brings in real patients right now without draining your budget.
The real difference
Picture someone waking up at 7am with pain shooting through their jaw. They grab their phone and type "emergency dentist near me". That is not curiosity or research. It is intent and urgency. If your ad shows, they click, call and book. There is a direct line from search to patient.
Now Facebook. Nobody opens Facebook thinking "I need a dentist today". They are scrolling, and your whitening offer appears. It might get some likes and a few clicks, but most of those people are not looking to book today.
Facebook is interruption marketing. You are asking for attention from people who are not thinking about a dentist. Clicks may be cheaper, but once you count the people who never convert, the cost per patient can end up higher.
Where practices go wrong
Many practices start with Facebook because it feels easier: more reach, more clicks, lower cost per click. They skip the part that brings in patients today. It is like throwing a party before sending the invitations.
If you want awareness, use Facebook. If you want booked appointments, start with Google.
The order I use
Step 1: Google Ads first. Target high-intent searches such as "dentist near me", "emergency dentist" plus your location, or "teeth whitening" plus your city. These people are actively looking. This is where your first advertising dollar should go.
Step 2: Add Facebook once Google is paying for itself. Use it for:
- Retargeting people who visited your site and didn't book
- Showing before and after results and educational content
- Promoting limited-time specials to people who already know you
That is when Facebook works: staying front of mind with a warm audience, not chasing cold traffic.
Think of it like building a house
Google Ads is the foundation. It gets patients in the chair now. Facebook is the walls and the paint. It builds your brand and visibility over time. Build the walls before the foundation and the whole thing falls over.
So start with search, get it working, then layer social on top to amplify what already works.
